Additional evidence that Steel must have returned to Delius Avenue at around one o’clock may be deduced from the statement of Bernard Barron, Steel and Hannon’s foreman. He told the police " I do know that sometime on that particular day, I can’t say whether it was morning or afternoon, Steel and Hannon did return to the depot because Hannon told me that they had been unable to do the garden at number 8 Delius Avenue due to the fact that there had been a murder on Ravenscliffe Estate"

If Hannon had told Barron this at the 10 o’clock tea break, as he claimed, would Barron not have re-assigned both of them to other work? After all, they would clearly be getting in the way in Delius Avenue - and would be tempted to watch the police rather than working in the gardens for what would be more or less the whole day. Would he have sent them back to this area at 10:30? It is not disputed that they were working there until lunchtime
