SUMMARY OF THIS ARGUMENT.

Hannon's story about Steel being away from the gardens when Carol was murdered depends on the story that cop cars were on the estate at around 10 o'clock.

In fact, it is clear that no one knew who the victim of the attack was at that time. Consequently no cop cars could have been driving around the estate checking on her - and Mrs Best could not have heard the news. Hannon clearly got his timing wrong.

The cop cars arrived at around 1 o'clock - and Mrs Best heard the news at about that time too.

This breaks the story that Steel went away from the gardens at the time when Carol was attacked.

In fact, it provides Steel with an alibi.
