Photograph 1 was taken in a photobooth in Blackpool about two months before the murder of Carol Wilkinson. Steel had gone there on a day trip - with his two workmates Eddie Hannon ( bottom right) and Paul Wilkinson.
As you can see, Steel is holding up two fingers to the camera. A close-up of one of the fingers shows that his nail is bitten down to the quick.
He could not have scratched Carol Wilkinson as her murderer did.
